Devon Open Studios: Art of the School and Family Tree

“Somebody lied, I say it’s hip to be alive” (David Bowie)
“Illustrating the sacred and profane” (Becky Nuttall)

Established artist and poet, Becky Nuttall, invites you into her studio
to view her new work this year in the forthcoming county-wide arts event, Devon Open
Studios. It is the largest showcase for artists in the county and Becky will be joining
hundreds of artists opening their doors for 16 days from 9th –24th of September 2017.

Becky will be taking part for the first time and the event is being held at
The Chapel House Drew Street Brixham (location 160 in Devon Open Studio guide)
on 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24th September from 11am – 6pm
There is launch between 12 – 3pm on 16th September

Becky comes from an artistic and literary background. She studied art in the early seventies
but got diverted by literature and, latterly, the social development of adolescents.
The research undertaken as part of her MA reconnected her to her own adolescence and it’s influences.
She writes poetry and performs locally.
Her work “Bedroom Shrine for Madonna of the Rocks” was shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2017

Becky paints mainly in acrylic but uses mixed media including materials she used as a child and student to
enhance the reference to emerging child artists. Becky includes works by her father and children to show the
artistic tradition that runs through her family. She is exploring intertextuality, collaboration and composites ti illustrate her  family biography.  Parts of original her childhood and student works are collaged into
paintings and some have a deliberate naive quality for this purpose.

Works with a reference to religious iconography replicate the paintings in her convent school.

This exhibition has two themes:
Art of the School: Religious influence on an emerging young atheist artist
Family Tree: Referencing the objects, places and influences in Becky’s past

“Visiting Artists” is Becky’s blog on her website; recalling the influence of her artist father, his friends, convent education and art school education on her life

Visiting Devon Open studio is enormously informative because you can see at a glance
how the artist works and have the chance to speak to them directly about the creative
process. The interaction between artists and viewer creates opportunities that support
every stage of artistic production and development.

Becky is looking forward to the show and hopes that Devon Open Studios enables you to gain an insight into her work. Free to the public, the event provides a unique chance to see the new work.

Devon Open Studios produces a comprehensive guide to help visitors plan their own art
